Pompeo says U.S. has expanded scope of Iran metals sanctions

There are some 11,000 US Air Force personnel at al-Udeid which has been a major launching point for missions against the Taliban in Afghanistan and ISIL in Iraq and Syria

US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo made clear on Thursday that the United States would attempt to impose a reinstatement of UN sanctions on Iran if the global arms embargo were to expire.

Pompeo said the 22 specific materials listed were used in connection with Iran's nuclear, military, or ballistic-missile programs, which "pose a grave threat to global peace and security".

Pompeo also repeated allegations that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) control Iran's construction sector.

Announcing this in a statement on Thursday evening, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo warned against the transfer of the identified metals to and from Iran.

"Iran's nuclear, ballistic missile, and military programs pose a grave threat to worldwide peace and security", Pompeo said in the statement.

As a result, sanctions may still be imposed on those who knowingly transfer certain materials to or from Iran to be used in connection with Iran's construction sector, Pompeo said.

On the newly released list is refined aluminum powder, a key ingredient in solid rocket fuel.

The United States has already felt that it has the right to impose the reinstatement of the UN economic sanctions against Tehran lifted as part of the global agreement of 2015 on Iranian nuclear power - and in their minds, even though US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from this deal in 2018.

The United States has reimposed sanctions that have sharply lowered Tehran's oil exports. In response, Iran gradually started breaching its nuclear commitments.

Russian Federation and China, two of the Permanent Five nations that enjoy veto power on the Security Council, want the UN embargo on selling conventional weapons to Iran to end on October 18 as laid out under a 2015 resolution.

Pompeo also has been urging the UN Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Iran.

Veto-wielding Russian Federation and China have questioned Washington's right to use a disputed legal move to force a return of United Nations sanctions on Iran.

"If it is not adopted, we will take the necessary measures to ensure that this arms embargo does not expire", insisted Mike Pompeo.
