Hurricane Might Delay NASA Astronauts Return Slated For August 2

Believed to be capsule C207 the Crew Dragon spacecraft

And since then, the capsule has been docked at the space station which allowed Hurley and Behnken to chip in with spacewalks and experiments.

Hurricane Isaias strengthened slightly as it tore past the Bahamas on Saturday, bearing down on Florida and expected to approach the southeast of the state later in the day before traveling up the eastern U.S. seaboard.

"We have confidence that the teams on the ground are, of course, watching that much more closely than we are, and we won't leave the space station without some good splashdown weather in front of us". "And, you know ... it certainly wouldn't be the first time that that's happened in a space vehicle, but it will be the first time in this particular vehicle if we do", Hurley said. There's more chow and I know the space station program's got more work that we can do, " he added.

Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley blasted off from Cape Canaveral on May 30 on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon, and are supposed to splash down off the coast of Florida on Sunday afternoon. US astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, who launched to the space station in May, are expected to board Crew Dragon around 5:30 p.m. ET and splash down at one of seven landing sites in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean at about 2:48 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Behnken and Hurley are scheduled to board the Dragon capsule Saturday and undock from the station with a planned splashdown on Sunday.

No issues with the capsule have been reported - a situation described by a SpaceX commentator as "pretty boring for the astronauts, but that's what we wanted".

Since the early 1970s, NASA astronauts have usually felt unwell following splashdown, Hurley noted.

Stich said Crew Dragon, an acorn-shaped pod that can seat up to seven astronauts, has been in a "very healthy" condition since docking on May 31 to the space station, where astronauts have been conducting tests and monitoring how the spacecraft performs over time in space.

The Crew Dragon spacecraft is certified for around 114 days in space.

Despite the threat of Hurricane Isaias strafing coastal Florida with brutal weather, NASA and SpaceX are "go" to return the first commercial astronauts to planet Earth this weekend. NASA will make a final call on whether to proceed approximately six hours prior to undocking. The first opens at 18,000 feet, then another set comes at 6,000 feet.

A SpaceX recovery ship staffed by engineers, medical personnel and fast-response support crews with jet skis and other gear will be stationed nearby to recover the capsule. American astronauts went to space with the help of Russian Federation.

Hurley and Behnken are both married to astronauts.

Their trip in SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft - named Endeavour - is technically a demonstration flight, showing off the capabilities of the ship as NASA advances private partnerships to revive USA space travel. The four-person crew will subsequently spend six months living and working aboard the orbiting outpost.
