Florida Teen Arrested for Allegedly Hacking Celeb Twitter Accounts

Twitter said bitcoin scammers who accessed dozens of high-profile accounts used

Twitter is now blaming the intrusion on a "phone spear phishing" attack against a small number of employees who fell for the stunt.

Nima Fazeli, a 22-year-old man from Orlando, Florida, was charged with aiding and abetting access of a protected computer.

According to the Justice Department, a United Kingdom resident, Mason Sheppard, aka "Chaewon", 19, was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and intentional access of a protected computer.

Police arrested a Florida teenager Friday on charges related to a July 15 Twitter attack, according to the Hillsborough State Attorney's Office. Image: Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. He's been accused of organized fraud, 17 counts of communication fraud, one count of fraudulent use of personal information with over $100,000 or 30 or more victims, 10 counts of fraudulent use of personal information, and one count of access to a computer or electronic device without authority.

Clark was arrested Friday in Tampa, Florida. Twitter responded to the situation, writing, "We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools".

Court papers in the California cases say Fazeli and Sheppard brokered the sale of Twitter accounts stolen by a hacker who identified himself as "Kirk" and said he could "reset, swap and control any Twitter account at will" in exchange for cybercurrency payments, claiming to be a Twitter employee.

Russia Plans to Register World's First Coronavirus Vaccine By August
Around the same time, the company will start a parallel phase 3 study testing a two-shot regimen of the vaccine, Stoffels said. All 20 animals that received the sham vaccine became infected and showed high levels of virus in their lungs and nasal swabs.

The accounts belonged to former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, Tesla founder Elon Musk and others. According to the state attorney, the scheme reaped more than $100,000 in Bitcoin in just one day.

"Chaewon", an alleged alias of Sheppard's, posted an OGUser thread entitled, "Pulling email for any Twitter/Taking Requests".

The attack targeted 130 Twitter accounts, tweeted from 45 of them, accessed the direct messages of 36 and downloaded data from 7 accounts, the company said.

The next day, those accounts transfered almost all of the digital currency, in 11 transfers, to other Bitcoin wallets, in an effort to hide or launder the money, according to government filings. He then sold access to those accounts and, later, used the Twitter accounts of companies, politicians, executives, and celebrities he took over to run a Bitcoin scam on the social network's platform. "Whether you're taking advantage of someone in person or on the internet, trying to steal their cash or their cryptocurrency - it's fraud, it's illegal, and you won't get away with it", Warren said.

Only two weeks after the most catastrophic hack ever to have hit Twitter, the Federal Bureau of Investigation managed to track down the persons responsible and arrest them in simultaneous operations taking place in Florida and the United Kingdom. He added that Chaewon/Ever So Anxious also was known as "Mason".

Twitter locked down affected accounts and removed the fraudulent tweets. PlugWalkJoe is pictured here chatting with Ever So Anxious/Chaewon/Mason using his Discord username "Beyond Insane".
