Sri Lanka drop 2011 World Cup fixing probe over no evidence

Sri Lanka Police Questions 2011 World Cup Opener Upul Tharanga In Fixing Charge

With no evidence found, Sri Lankan police made a decision to call off the investigation.

The Sri Lanka Police, on Friday, called off its investigation over allegations of match-fixing in the 2011 World Cup final.

Police said they will next interview Kumar Sangakkara, the captain of the losing side and the current president of the Marylebone Cricket Club in London, who was asked to report to the SIU on Thursday.

Meanwhile, vice-captain during the match, Mahela Jayawardena has been summoned to the investigation unit tomorrow to record a statement on the same allegations.

"At this time, we have not been presented with any evidence that supports the claims made or which would merit launching an investigation under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code", Alex Marshall, General Manager, ICC ACU, said in a statement.

"Since he says he has evidence and proof, the prudent thing to do is to go to the Anti-Corruption Unit of the ICC and put forth his claims, so they can investigate them thoroughly and come to a conclusion whether what the former minister says is true or not".

The quizzing of players drew public ire and the former sports minister was subjected to criticism for raising the issue after nine years of the event.

Filipinos missing from fishing boat after collision at sea
PCG however said the Chinese vessel also sustained damages on its prow, indicating it rammed the capsized local fishing boat. On the same day, the PCG received a distress call from the captain of HK-flagged MV Vienna Wood about the collision.

Aluthgamage claimed that he believed that players were not involved but couldn't prove how could a match be fixed without involvement of the participants. I stand by what I say.

"I don't want to divulge too much for the sake of the country".

"I would not involve the cricketers in this".

He later seemed to backtrack on the statements after both Sangakkara and Jayawardene publicly spoke out against him, claiming that he was talking about certain officials selling the match and not the players.

The inquiry was instituted after former sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage alleged that the final at the Wankhede, which India won by six wickets, was "sold". Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a commanding total of 274/6 in 50 overs with Jayawardene (103*) slamming an unbeaten ton.

However, the Lankans were unable to defend the target as Gautam Gambhir (97) and MS Dhoni (91*) emerged as architects of India's triumph.
