Imran Khawaja named interim ICC chairman, Manohar steps down

Shashank Manohar steps down as ICC chief

As per the ICC rules, Manohar could've stayed at the position for another two-year term.

His replacement is expected to be ratified by the ICC Board in the next week. "He has left cricket and the ICC in a better place than he found it". His deputy Imran Khwaja, from Hong Kong, will be the interim chairman. If he joins the chairman's race, he could face a challenge from 72-year-old Colin Graves, former chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board. "He realised he didn't have the numbers", sources tracking developments said.

The ICC last held elections for the chairman's position in 2016, when Manohar was elected through a secret ballot.

Many prominent names of the cricketing fraternity including BCCI members weren't too impressed with Manohar's departure from the apex body.

"Anybody who can find a proposer and a seconder can find himself or herself worthy of a contest".

Khwaja was elected as ICC's deputy chairman in 2017.

"Was he incapable of taking a call on the World T20 if he knew he was going to step down? Expect that announcement also to come anytime soon", add those in the know.
