What measures are being imposed in the Leicester lockdown?

Non-essential shops are to close in Leicester amid tightening coronavirus restrictions

Leicester has become the first area of the United Kingdom to see a localised lockdown following a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the city.

When asked how people would be stopped from travelling outside the city, he said: "We're recommending against all but essential travel both to and from and within Leicester, and as we saw during the peak, the vast majority of people will abide by these rules".

"But we've got it now, we are collaborating with he government, we will cooperate with this", he said.

He said the measures would be enforced by police "in some cases".

"I'm yet to understand what the impact of the partial lockdown in Leicester is going to have on the club".

There was frustration, however, among businesses at having to turn away customers just as the rest of England was preparing for a further opening up with the return of pubs, restaurants and cinemas on Saturday.

The lockdown restrictions imposed across the United Kingdom in March will be reinforced in Leicester, the government has announced.

Regarding travel restrictions, the Health Secretary said "we will if we have to", but he added he hoped people in the city would "do the right thing".

The decision to extend Leicester's lockdown by two weeks was officially announced in the House of Commons last night (29 June) by the Government's Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, who said the city had "10% of all positive cases in the country over the past week".

Schools will close from Thursday and will not reopen until next term.

"But it is profoundly in the interests of people in Leicester and across the country that we get this virus under control".

Leicestershire Police said: "This is a dynamic situation and we will adjust accordingly, providing proportionate policing under the relevant legislation to help keep people safe in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland".

There was also confusion about the borders of Leicester's new lockdown area.

It came as Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked the people of Leicester for their "forbearance" in dealing with the new coronavirus restrictions.

Through the councils, authorities will also help workplaces with coronavirus clusters to "implement more stringently the Covid-secure guidelines".

It added: "Our approach has always been clear that we will use the four Es - engage, explain, encourage and enforce where necessary".

"So we've been taking this highly localised approach but unfortunately that targeted action wasn't working in Leicester and that's why we have taken this much broader measure".
