Victoria reports 64 new infections, Queensland shuts its border

Sporting calendar in chaos due to rise in Victorian Covid-19 cases

He also scrapped plans to reopen the state's border on July 20, citing concerns about the rising spike of coronavirus cases in Melbourne.

Cafes and restaurants will only be open for takeaway and delivery.

In a press briefing, Victorian State Premier Daniel Andrews ordered residents in 10 zip codes to stay home for the next four weeks and only travel to work or to stores to buy essential items.

"People are desperate for this to be over, no one more than me, but it isn't and pretending won't get us to the other side".

"So any teams coming in from Victoria to South Australia will have to do that two weeks of isolation [and] any South Australian team that plays a Victorian team or goes to Victoria to play a Victorian team will have to do that two weeks of isolation on return to our state".

It comes as Victoria recorded 64 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of 233 new cases in the state since last Thursday.

The double-digit increases in the number of new cases of coronavirus in Victoria extend into the 15 straight day.

Gomes is also an England Under-20 global and was captain of the Three Lions side which won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017. Odion Ighalo has made a positive impression since signing for Manchester United on loan in January.

The Victorian government is receiving help from defense personnel and healthcare workers sent from interstate, with teams door-knocking in affected neighborhoods to ask people to undertake tests for the illness, Andrews said.

"On enforcement, Victoria police will be actively, actively enforcing these suburban lockdowns, this stay-at-home order", he announced.

The suburbs with the highest number of new cases in the state are Broadmeadows, Fawkner and Auburn Vale.

"It will be a devastating impact on people and particularly local businesses, but we have to do it", he added.

"This decision will be hard for those with loved ones in Victoria but we can't risk South Australia going backwards". If they do, they must undergo mandatory quarantine in a hotel at their own expense for a minimum of 14 days.

The news comes after Queensland imposed nearly identical restrictions on sporting teams coming into the state from Monday, prompting the idea that hubs in New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania or the Northern Territory might be the only viable way to continue the AFL season without compromising the integrity on the game.
