USA top medical experts rebuke American Airlines for filling planes

American Airlines will start booking flights at full capacity again on July 1

"Obviously that is something that is of concern".

To allow for social distancing amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, airlines have reduced the number of bookings on flights, blocking middle seats.

The airline originally shut down flights between China and the U.S.in February due to the coronavirus outbreak. In late March, American Airlines said it would limit the number of passengers on aircrafts, not assigning half of main cabin middle seats on every flight.

"When they announced that the other day obviously there was substantial disappointment with American Airlines", said Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those on the flight will still have to adhere to United's updated safety protocols, which include wearing a mask while onboard the flight and answering a health questionnaire.

"I would think given the circumstances and spiking right now, it would be wise to separate", AA flier Amanda Goodwin told NewsChannel 5. Bernie Sanders during a Senate health committee hearing.

Need to travel this summer but don't want to board a full flight? The company said Friday it would inform passengers of the change and allow them to move to a more open flight, at no extra charge, if their flight is full.

Province increases outdoor gathering limit to 200
Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, provided her latest COVID-19 update at a news conference on Tuesday. All public health measures remain in place, however, including physical distancing between people of different households.

"That's the reason I'm flying Delta because they're keeping one seat in between passengers so I feel a lot more comfortable doing that than being in a completely booked airplane", traveler Celeste Haugan said.

American Airlines said on Tuesday it has "multiple layers of protection in place. including required face coverings, enhanced cleaning procedures, and a pre-flight COVID-19 symptom checklist".

Airlines are desperate to increase revenue as they try to survive a plunge in air travel that reached 95% during April.

In a statement released by American Airlines Group Inc., flights will be booked to capacity going forward, abandoning previous social distancing guidelines for operation, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Among other large US carriers, Delta Air Lines DAL.N and Southwest Airlines LUV.N are limiting the number of seats sold on their flights through at least September. Budget carrier Spirit Airlines does not.
