Province increases outdoor gathering limit to 200

Limits on outdoor gatherings in Alberta double to 200-person maximum

"As I have said before, it is critical that we do not shame those who test positive, but rather support them to isolate and work with public health to do contact tracing and followup as these restaurants have done".

The province announced earlier in the day that Albertans are now allowed to gather outside in groups of up to 200 people after increasing the large gathering limits ahead of Canada Day.

Anyone who's visited the restaurants in the last two weeks is encouraged to get a COVID-19 test.

Fort McMurray now has 20 active cases and 31 recoveries of COVID-19.

"The increase applies to attendees at community outdoor events such as festivals, fireworks displays, rodeos and sporting events, and outdoor performances", the release states.

All public health measures remain in place, however, including physical distancing between people of different households.

While the risk of transmission is lower at outdoor events, officials say it remains a real threat.

Twenty-six additional cases were reported in the Edmonton Zone Sunday, which has seen a total of 984 cases, 242 of them active, and 727 have recovered. Case numbers hadn't been this high since May 16, when 72 new cases were reported in Alberta.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, provided her latest COVID-19 update at a news conference on Tuesday.

The new cases dropped from Saturday, when 69 new cases were reported - the highest since mid-May and almost twice the daily case count through the month of June, provincial data shows.

There is still a limit of 100 people for certain outdoor events including wedding ceremonies, funeral services and indoor spectator events where people are seated.

So far, 154 people in the province have died from the illness.

50-59 years, two deaths.
