No new deaths reported in Ireland in relation to Covid-19

Coronavirus Six more deaths

On Saturday, Ireland reported 23 new infections, the highest number of new cases for two weeks, with six deaths.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan, speaking at yesterday's press briefing where no deaths and 24 new cases of the virus were announced, said there had been a worrying rise in infections- many of which are related to travel from overseas.

There have now been 1,736 COVID-19 related deaths in the Republic of Ireland, and a total of 25,473 confirmed cases.

While this is welcome news it comes with a worrying rise in cases as the HPSC has been notified of 24 new cases of the virus.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: "Each person should risk assess their own environment to inform their personal decisions and actions during this pandemic". Last week, there were over 1.1 million cases reported and there have now been over 10 million cases reported globally to date.

He said officials were "genuinely very concerned" about the increasing "role and risk of travel", RTÉ reports.

What measures are being imposed in the Leicester lockdown?
The lockdown restrictions imposed across the United Kingdom in March will be reinforced in Leicester, the government has announced.

"This is now a real concern and a worrying trend at a time when many people are reconnecting with friends and loved ones and may be gathering in larger groups", Holohan said.

Dublin GAA footballer Siobhán Killeen has recovered from the coronavirus.

Hairdressers, beauticians, restaurants and pubs that serve food are among the outlets which opened on Monday.

Gyms, swimming pools and other exercise facilities can also re-open, while all team sports - including close contact sports - can resume.

Face coverings will be compulsory on public transport as capacity increases to around 50% of pre-COVID levels.

Dr Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health, agreed with Dr Holohan and said travel overseas for leisure remained unsafe.
