ISPs call for ban on websites of China-backed companies

Jessica Alba daughter Honor TikTok dance video

While the Chinese Foreign Ministry withheld further comment till it had verified the facts, the embassy here cited four grounds for seeking a review of the Indian Government's announcement on Monday banning 59 apps, including the popular TIkTok, on grounds of national security due to apprehensions of surreptitious data mining and its transfer to servers overseas.

As of right now, we are awaiting more information about this decision. It cited privacy concerns that it said pose a threat to India's sovereignty and security. And that year, India's defence ministry asked all armed personnel and officers to uninstall 42 Chinese apps it classified as "spyware", according to media reports.

Though the Chinese Foreign Ministry withheld any more comments, its mission here said the grounds for the banning of the 59 apps was "ambiguous and far-fetched", grated against the general trend of global trade and e-commerce and was not conducive to consumer interests and the market competition in India.

Indian lawmakers and officials have always been calling for a ban anyway, out of concerns over data collection, exposure of children to sexually explicit material, numerous reports of deaths and injuries, and general anxiety that youths are frittering their lives away on the app. The move could affect how millions of Indians work and play. TikTok is under a national security review stateside, and the military has already instructed service members to delete the app from their phones.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters in a briefing on Tuesday that "Indian government has a responsibility to uphold the legal rights of global investors including those from China".

He adds that although there are ways to get around the ban, it will "effectively kill" popular apps.

In the years since it has launched in India, the app has become a platform for Indians of all ages and classes - from police constables to housewives - who dance, sing and perform for their followers.

IPhone 12 Won't Include a Charger or EarPods
A new report is causing rumors to swirl that Apple plans to remove most of the accessories from future iPhone boxes. These iPads will have a 20W charger , which will be obtainable as an individual buy for Apple iPhone entrepreneurs.

Chinese brands like Xiaomi and TikTok were traced to be tracking location and incognito search histories of their users in India using illegal means such as SIM-tapping; a high level official of India's Information and Technology department told Sputnik while justifying the decision of banning the app.

Some Indian apps like ShareChat, a local language social media platform, welcomed the ban.

What do the app-makers say?

Indian industry analysts believe this could include job losses for people working for the app companies.

It added: "We have been invited to meet the concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications".

The compilation of such data, and its mining and profiling by elements hostile to India is "a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures", the statement said.

Others bemoaned the potential loss of jobs at the app companies' Indian offices.
