India's TikTok Ban Latest Overseas Setback for China Tech

TikTok Ban Creators Asking Users to Follow Them on Instagram YouTube

If you already have the app installed or if you sideloaded it, you'll see this notice and a blank slate with no posts or videos.

Pointing out that these apps have millions of users in India - TikTok alone has around 120 million active users - China insisted the apps "have been operating strictly in accordance with Indian laws and regulations" and banning them would also lead to loss of jobs in India for those employed by the app makers.

"The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India". However, further downloads of some of these apps may not be possible.

Why has TikTok been removed? Both the e-commerce sites have been popular among Indian consumers and both have featured among the top ten most downloaded e-commerce apps in the country.

The Indian government on Monday banned apps like TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community over national security concerns as India-China bilateral relations remain strained after the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley clash with Chinese PLA troops in eastern Ladakh. Earlier today, TikTok's official Twitter account in India issued a statement saying it was in the process of complying with the government's decision and reiterated its stance on user privacy and Chinese government meddling.

Cinema giants delay reopening in United Kingdom and USA as movie releases stall
In a statement, the company said the move was "in line with recent adjustments to the schedule of upcoming movie releases". The world's second-largest cinema chain had previously announced cinemas in both countries would open on 10 July.

Yes, this has happened before and this is not the first time an app has been banned in India. TikTok's parent company ByteDance had filed a counter-affidavit and appealed to the apex court against the high court's order.

Along with mobile app services, Chinese companies also control a significant share of India's electronics market, particularly that of mobile phones.

What's the scale of impact of this move?

Apart from the impact of the Chinese app business, it is important to note numerous apps that are a part of this list have offices in India that employed thousands of employees and apps like TikTok financially supported many Indian creators.
