'Golden State Killer' suspect pleads guilty to murder in California

Joseph DeAngelo 72 who authorities said was identified by DNA evidence as the the Golden State Killer appears at his arraignment in Sacramento Calif

An elderly ex-policeman confessed on Monday to being the violent serial prowler known as the "Golden State Killer," pleading guilty to 13 murders as well as 13 counts of kidnapping in a deal with USA prosecutors meant to spare him the death penalty.

In the first case, Deangelo pleaded guilty in the 1975 shooting death of Visalia resident Claude Snelling, 45, who was killed as he tried to protect his daughter from being kidnapped by an unknown man who had broken into the family's home.

Prosecutors also revealed that on the day of his arrest, while alone in an interview room, DeAngelo was overheard having an animated conversation with himself, referring to an apparent alter ego named "Jerry", whom he described as being "in my head" and compelling him to "do those things".

Camera IconJane Carson-Sandler, a 1976 rape victim of Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo, stands and gives a double thumbs -up to agree with a prosecutor's statement about part of DeAngelo's anatomy, during a court hearing in Sacramento, Calif., Monday, June 29, 2020. The Vietnam War veteran spent six years in law enforcement before he was sacked for shoplifting dog repellent and a hammer from a drugstore. But no matter the Golden State Killer's physical condition, he's not going to ever get out of custody.

"The family members of the murder victims have waited for decades for justice for their loved ones", added Holliday.

In February 1978, the "Golden State Killer" shot and killed Brian and Katie Maggiore, who were walking their dog in the Sacramento area.

Because of California's statue of limitations, he was not charged for the rapes.

Despite the defendant's frail in-court appearance, Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney Thien Ho said in court that DeAngelo "feigned feeble incoherence" after being arrested in 2018.

Investigators identified him using a then-novel investigative technique known as genetic genealogy that combines DNA analysis with genealogical research.

Along the way, the meticulous masked assailant was given a number of other nicknames including the East Area Rapist, the Diamond-Knot Killer and the Original Nightstalker.

They then gathered DeAngelo's DNA on the handle of a vehicle door and a tissue in his garbage can, which matched the DNA from the crime scenes. He was arrested at his Citrus Heights home on April 25, 2018.

DeAngelo, dressed in orange jail garb and slumped in a wheelchair with his mouth agape, answered "guilty" in a raspy voice when the judge asked his plea to the first of 13 counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping charges he faced, most of which also encompassed rape allegations.

The prosecutors said they will hold a news conference Monday at 3 p.m. (6 p.m. ET) at the Sacramento State ballroom.
