Detroit cop plows into crowd during Black Lives Matter rally

Detroit police filmed driving SUV through crowd of protesters in blood-chilling VIDEO

The incident happened on Sunday as people in Detroit took part in the latest protests against police brutality and racism in the US. A viral video of the incident showed the vehicle violently hitting multiple people and it continued to drive even as protestors were still on the hood.

Video shared on Twitter shows a group of protesters marching near Waterman and Vernor Highway in Detroit. One of the protesters said the officer "ran over a couple people's arms, feet".

He added that he tried to corral protesters around the roadblock and stood in front of the vehicle in hopes of preventing it from moving, out of concern for the other demonstrators.

At least one protester appears to be left on the hood, hanging on to the vehicle as it speeds away, and is later thrown from it as the auto drives off.

The protest started around 4:30 p.m. in response to the death of George Floyd, the Detroit News reported.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig held a briefing earlier today and said the officers did the right thing, given the situation. "They certainly left the location and then after they left to avoid any further harm, the protesters then left without any further incident".

US Supreme Court rules to uphold abortion rights
Abortion rights supporters were quick to hail today's decision but cautioned that abortion rights remain under attack. Meanwhile, Missouri's admitting-privilege requirement has survived several court challenges, most recently when U.S.

"Detroit Police Department just ran straight through a bunch of our protesters", Ethan Ketner, a protester who filmed the scene, explained on Facebook. Some demonstrators then began to pound on it while one seemed to break something against its back window. "They accelerated to get out of there in the event they were being fired upon".

Craig added that the two officers in the auto told investigators they believed they were possibly being shot at, which prompted them to flee the scene.

Craig says the officers acted appropriately and remain on the job.

Once protesters began getting violent, they move into a criminal status, Craig said.

"That's why we march", one protester told WDIV. "I can't explain how or why he thought it was a good idea, but that's what he chose to do". "I think police haven't seen that in a while, so they don't know how to control that".

The Detroit Police Chief is defending the actions of his department and said a cop "did the right thing" after the officer was seen on camera slowly driving into a group of protesters in southwest Detroit, Michigan, before then accelerating to 25 miles per hour and injuring several unarmed individuals.
