Province increases outdoor gathering limit to 200

More Albertans are now able to attend outdoor community events, as the gathering limit across the province is being raised from 100 to 200 people.

The change applies to outdoor events like performances, festivals, fireworks displays and sporting events. "Seated outdoor events will still require the necessary space between families and cohorts within stadium-style seating".

"We have now expanded the gathering limits for audience-type outdoor community events for those who wish to gather in person", said Deena Hinshaw, Alberta chief medical officer of health, during Tuesday's COVID-19 update.

Outdoor gatherings in Alberta have essentially doubled in size.

Hinshaw also pointed out two regions - one each in Calgary and Edmonton - were put on the watch list for having more than 50 active COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population: Edmonton Mill Woods West and Calgary Centre.

Case numbers hadn't been this high since May 16, when 72 new cases were reported in Alberta.

Fort McMurray now has 20 active cases and 31 recoveries of COVID-19.

Forty-one Albertans were in hospital with the virus, nine of whom were in intensive care units.
