Carl Reiner Dies, Comedy Legend and Iconic Director Was 98

comedy icon Carl Reiner, RIP

It starred Van Dyke as a television comedy writer working for a demanding, eccentric boss (Reiner) and living with his wife (Mary Tyler Moore in her first major TV role) and young son in suburban New Rochelle, N.Y. During his career, which spanned over six decades, Reiner created "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "2000 Year Old Man" alongside his longtime friend Mel Brooks, and directed movies including "The Jerk" with Steve Martin and "Oh God".

His son, actor-director Rob Reiner, confirmed the loss Tuesday on Twitter.

Carl and Rob Reiner made history in 2017 as the first father and son to have their hand and footprints memorialized in cement in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre.

Tributes poured in online, including from actor Josh Gadd, who called Reiner "one of the greatest comedic minds of all time", and writer Bill Kristol, who said: "What a life!"

A television comedy pioneer, Carl Reiner is remembered for creating the classic TV comedy "The Dick Van Dyke Show" as well as making some notable on-screen appearances. Reiner has also appeared in many famous television shows over the decades, including Night Gallery, Frasier, The Bernie Mac Show, Hot in Cleveland, and Two and a Half Men.

Recruited into a special unit that put on shows for the troops, Reiner began writing and performing his own comedy material.

Carl Reiner was born on March 20, 1922 and grew up in The Bronx, New York.

Reiner and Brooks remained close into their late 90s with Reiner telling USA Today in 2019 that they got together regularly to watch game shows and movies.

He later teamed with Brooks on "The Steve Allen Show", playing the straight man to Brooks' 2,000 Year Old Man character. Start with Sid Caesar and Our Show of Shows and go from there.

Victor of nine Emmy Awards, Reiner earned five for The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961-66, and on which he played television host Alan Brady. Originally a starring vehicle for himself titled "Head of the Family", the show was retooled with Reiner instead taking on the role of egotistical TV host Alan Brady, a role he later reprised in 1995 on an episode of Mad About You. But CBS ultimately picked up the series in 1961, after it was recast and retitled for its new star, "The Dick Van Dyke Show". After its impressive box office figures, the pair made three more films in a row - Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983) and All of Me (1984) - all of which were substantial successes.

Reiner wrote four volumes of memoirs, including "I Just Remembered" in 2014, as well as children's books.

He was in 2001's Ocean's Eleven and its two sequels as conman Saul Bloom, and had a double act with Mel Brooks.
