Baseball's minor leagues cancel 2020 seasons due to coronavirus

Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson

Minor League Baseball (MiLB) canceled its 2020 season on Tuesday, as Major League Baseball continued to push ahead with plans to begin play next month even as cases of the novel coronavirus continue to spike in regions across the United States.

The decision to shelve the season came after Major League Baseball opted to suspend an agreement to supply players to its 261 Minor League Baseball affiliate teams.

The team says any planned giveaways and promotions scheduled for the 2020 season will be moved to the 2021 season.

Fans won't be buying any peanuts or Cracker Jack at minor league ballparks this year. From drive-in fireworks shows to family movie nights on the giant videoboards to experiencing 'dinner on the diamond, ' teams will be finding creative ways to stay engaged with their community. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Philadelphia Phillies Triple-A affiliate, allowed fans to play TopGolf at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown.
