Airbus shedding 15,000 jobs, mostly in Europe

Airbus A321 test

The current workforce at Broughton is 6,080 and Filton just under 3,200.

The company is cutting 15,000 jobs across its global operations.

Aside from the prospective 15,000 job cuts, many Airbus employees are now working part-time, with their respective governments paying them unemployment benefit for the hours not worked, through September and in some cases beyond. Implementation is set to begin this fall as Airbus begins to consult with its social partners.

The commercial aircraft business activity has dropped by close to 40% in recent months as the industry faces an unprecedented crisis. Air traffic is not expected to recover to pre-crisis levels before 2023.

"Airbus is facing the gravest crisis this industry has ever experienced", said Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury.

"These measures allowed us to weather the early stages of the economic shock", Faury added in a video message.

He said management was "fully committed to limiting the social impact of this adaptation".

Paul Everitt, chief executive of trade body ADS said: "This is undoubtedly the toughest period the global aerospace industry has ever faced".

Airbus has about 135,000 employees globally, with nearly 81,000 of those in the hard-hit commercial-aviation division. This hard news will be unsettling for their employees and those working as part of the supply chain.

COVID-19 outbreaks declared at 4 Edmonton restaurants
All public health measures remain in place, however, including physical distancing between people of different households. Forty-one Albertans were in hospital with the virus, nine of whom were in intensive care units.

Faury, a Frenchman who speaks fluent German and is not closely associated with the company's previously warring factions, virtually all of whom have left, thanked governments as well as financial markets for support during the crisis.

Europe's largest airplane maker said it planned to cut 5,100 jobs in Germany, 5,000 in France, 1,700 in the United Kingdom, 900 in Spain and another 1,300 in other locations around the world by the middle of next year.

Plaid Cymru's Llyr Gruffydd warned two-thirds of the 1,700 job losses could be in Broughton.

Airbus did not rule out layoffs, but said it would first seek voluntary departures and early retirements.

Unite has been calling for the UK Government to put a plan of support in place for the Aerospace sector for months. Tonight there will be a huge number of workers at Airbus extremely anxious by this announcement - my thoughts are with them and their families.

Shadow transport secretary Jim McMahon said: "News of job losses today in the aviation sector is devastating for those affected".

Mr Skates said his thoughts were with workers and their families.

"If the UK Government does not step in now to ensure the support is there for Airbus to get through this crisis, the consequences for Wales could be catastrophic".

He said coronavirus continued to "generate huge challenges for businesses".
