One Dead in Shooting at Jefferson Square Park in Louisville, Kentucky

Homicide investigators were interviewing the suspect, who had been hospitalised after the shooting, interim Louisville Police Chief Robert Schroeder said at a news conference on Sunday.

"I am deeply saddened by the violence that erupted in Jefferson Square Park tonight, where those who have been voicing their concerns have been gathered", Mayor Fischer said.

One protester at the scene was seen carrying a rifle and scope, according to a WAVE local news reporter.

The apparent shooter was also wounded and taken to a nearby hospital where he was put under police custody.

The LMPD noted in the statement that Jefferson Square Park would remain closed for several hours. For almost a month, protesters have been calling for the officers involved in her death to be charged.

In response to Taylor's death, one officer involved in the shooting was sacked and the city council voted to ban no-knock warrants.

During the encounter, Walker fired his gun, hitting an officer in the leg, and the police opened fire, hitting Taylor at least eight times.

On 13 March, Taylor, 26, was shot dead by police in her home as officers entered to execute a search warrant targeting her former boyfriend.

Police announced that while they would continue to allow peaceful protests during the day, they would not permit protesters to stay in the park overnight or erect "tents of any kind". Mr Walker has said he thought he was defending himself from an intruder.

"This is absolutely not what they wanted or any of us wanted".

He said the suspect had been repeatedly asked by other people in the park to leave due to his disruptive behavior. He fired 10 of the over 25 bullets into Taylor's apartment, authorities said.Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Officer Myles Cosgrove were reassigned.McAtee, 53, was shot and killed as Louisville police officers and the National Guard were working June 1 to disperse protests throughout the city.

"The citizens of this community, including members of this Metro Council, have been very upset with the perceived lack of transparency by the city", said Brent Ackerson, who chairs the Louisville Metro Council's government oversight committee.
