Second Round of Local Elections in France

Bulgaria Second Round of Local Elections in France

The second round of polls was scheduled to be held on March 22 but was postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. She was first elected as Paris mayor in 2014.

The party's candidate in Paris, Agnes Buzyn, was projected to come a distant third with incumbent Socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo on course to easily win a second term as mayor of the French capital.

The Greens could do well in cities such as Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux, sometimes in alliance with the Left, building on the momentum they created in 2019's European elections.

Paris is a major battleground, because the mayor will oversee the 2024 Olympics. Only 44.7 per cent of voters, a record low, cast ballots in the first round of the municipal elections.

Some 16.5 million eligible voters in around 5,000 cities and towns cast their ballots at polling stations after the first round failed to produce a decisive outcome.

A day after a powerful push by the Greens in French municipal elections, President Emmanuel Macron on Monday vowed to speed up environmental policies - promising an extra €15 billion to fight global warming over the next two years, and throwing his support behind two referendums on major climate policy. Mail-in voting isn't allowed in France.

The spread of Covid-19 has slowed significantly in France, following almost 200,000 confirmed cases and 29,781 deaths.

However, Mr Macron has expressed concern at the low turnout in the elections, which are seen as a key indicator in the lead-up to presidential elections in 2022.

Most restrictions have now been eased, but there is widespread anger at the government over shortages of personal protective equipment, including face masks, in the early stages of the pandemic.

Macron is widely rumoured to be preparing for a cabinet reshuffle after Sunday's results, and the future of Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, who won his race for mayor in the Normandy port city of Le Havre, appeared unsure.

"Ecology is the area where Macron is perceived as having done nothing", said Frederic Dabi, director of pollster Ifop. He may appoint someone else to act as mayor if he remains at the head of the government.

His party, Republic on the Move, didn't have candidates in every race and in some instances was backing local politicians from the left or the right instead.

Opinion polls now show Mr Macron's popularity rating is hovering around 40 per cent - higher than before the virus outbreak.

Government spokesperson Sibeth Ndiaye said "we were the challengers in this election", stressing that planting local roots "is taking time".

The conservative Republicans party, which was the big victor in the 2014 municipal election and has a strong network of local elected officials, appeared to do well again.

The anti-immigration, far-right National Rally, usually buoyed by low voter turnout in French elections, won a symbolic victory in the southern city of Perpignan, making Louis Aliot the first member of the party to run a city of more than 100,000 inhabitants since 1995.
