Number of coronavirus cases passes 10 million worldwide

As of Sunday morning, a COVID-19 dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at the university, which has been tracking cases across the world during the pandemic, indicated there are now 10,004,643 total confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The US leads the nations of the world in cases by far, accounting for well over a third of the global total.

More than a quarter of the world's reported coronavirus deaths have occurred in the US, where 31 states have seen a jump in cases compared to two weeks ago.

In the U.S., the daily tally of new confirmed cases totaled 42,597 on Saturday.

More than 25 percent of the global cases come from the U.S., according to the Johns Hopkins Data, as there have been at least 2,530,587 cases confirmed as of Saturday.

Brazil isn't alone: Peru, Chile, and Mexico have all reported more than 200,000 coronavirus cases.

Florida recorded 9,585 new cases in 24 hours on Saturday, a new daily record. Nearly 2,500 new cases were recorded in 24 hours, taking the total to 220,180, health officials said, according to Reuters. The intensive care units in some Texas hospitals are now 100% full, after the state broke hospitalization records for 15 days in a row.

Brazil, where coronavirus infections were still on the rise, ranked No. 2 behind the U.S.in both confirmed cases and total deaths, with 1.3 million infections and over 57,000 deaths.

NY so far has recorded the highest death toll in the US, with over 31,000 deaths.

The 10-million milestone comes as many hard-hit countries are easing lockdowns while making extensive alterations to work and social life that could last for a year or more until a vaccine is available.

China, New Zealand and Australia have seen new outbreaks in the past month, despite largely stifling local transmission.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization warned of a second wave of infections as governments rushed to reopen their economies amid soaring joblessness.
