59 apps banned by government including TikTok, SHAREit, WeChat, UC Browser

A border clash between the neighbours resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers earlier this month

Jayanth Kolla, an analyst at research firm Convergence Catalyst, told TechCrunch the move was surprising and will have huge impact on Chinese firms, many of which count India as their biggest market.

Ministry of Information Technology took the step "in view of the emergent nature of threats", officials said. "The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures", it said.

Another app falling in the MeitY's list is CamScanner, which is a popular solution for scanning documents in mobile phones.

The ban on the mostly Chinese apps comes after a deadly border conflict between nuclear-armed neighbours India and China which saw 20 Indian soldiers lose their lives during hand-to-hand combat.

The Indian soldiers were killed in a brawl along the disputed border in northern Ladakh region on June 15 in the deadliest faceoff for nearly half a century between the two countries. "This decision is a targeted move to ensure the safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace".

The action comes over a week after Indian intelligence red-flagged dozens of apps as "unsafe", and affects several popular applications in the country, including TikTok and SHAREit.

It was banned briefly past year after concerns were raised about the app being used to distribute pornography.

Monday evening's announcement is the latest standoff between the two neighboring nations following a deadly border earlier this month that stoked historical tensions between them.

While India did not point directly at China in the ministry's comments on the ban, the overwhelming majority of the outlawed applications are of Chinese origin.

Beijing has denied accusations from New Delhi that Chinese forces entered Indian territory.
