NYT says Tom Cotton editorial 'did not meet our standards'

A New York Times staffer told Adweek that more reporters plan to walk off the job this

"We've examined the piece and the process leading up to its publication", Eileen Murphy, a Times spokeswoman, said in a statement.

Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton is continuing to beat the drums of military occupation, penning an op-ed in the New York Times on Wednesday saying US President Donald Trump should "send in the troops" as mass protests against police brutality enter their ninth day.

In response to the pushback from NYT staff and readers alike, James Bennet, the Times' editorial page editor, defended the paper's decision to run the piece and said the opinion section has also published "powerful arguments supporting protests, advocating fundamental change and criticizing police abuses".

"[Cotton's editorial] undermines the journalistic work of our members, puts our Black staff members in danger, promotes hate, and is likely to encourage further violence", reads the statement from The NewsGuild of NY.

Black Women-Owned Haircare Brands To Support Right Now
Black Ballad is a membership platform creating content, organising events and bringing attention to black-owned brands. If we are to be aligned with the idea that Black Lives Matter , it is time to prove it in more ways than one.

The decision follows a substantial backlash by staff members.

Staffers, too, protested the publication - very publicly.

"As a black woman, as a journalist, I am deeply ashamed that we ran this", tweeted Nikole Hannah-Jones, who last month won a Pulitzer prize for her work on The 1619 Project on the legacy of slavery and racial injustice for black Americans. And a letter to the newspaper's publishers and leadership, signed by over 500 employees and published by Slate on Thursday, said Cotton's op-ed is full of inaccuracies that were not fact-checked, is a risky call for violence against the American people and asked for several remedies including adding more comment moderators to the paper's Community team.

Our thought bubble via Axios' Sara Fischer: The New York Times faces unique criticism when it publishes some op-eds authored by right-wing or right-of-center opinion columnists, with examples including Bret Stephens. Some 30 members of its 210-member editorial staff had called in sick Thursday following the mistake, which black staff members angrily condemned. "The carelessness of our leadership makes it harder to do our jobs, and at worst puts our lives at risk". "We understand that many readers find Senator Cotton's argument painful, even risky".
