United Kingdom will extend HK visa rights if China pursues security law

"All of the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong people and worldwide investors will remain unchanged", Hong Kong's government said in a statement on Wednesday.

But the US Secretary of State said that the proposed security law was "only the latest in a series of actions" undermining Hong Kong's freedoms.

So what will it mean if that special status is revoked?

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer blamed Trump for failing to stand up for Hong Kong, saying in a tweet: "Pres. Trump will forever be known as the president who lost Hong Kong to the Chinese Communist Party because of his mollycoddling of Pres. Xi". With a free economy and a competitive tax regime, it's attracted many multinational companies to its shores. Rather, it is connected to various elements of trade and human rights issues that have seen USA officials complain about Chinese industrial espionage and spying and harassment of dissidents and religious and ethnic minorities.

So what is the United States threatening?

Asked what action the British government might take Mr Raab later added: "We want to wait and see the details of the legislation".

Taiwan and mainland China have been ruled separately after they split in the wake of a civil war in 1949. Goods can travel without any kind of tariffs.

Those arrangements have helped Hong Kong become a centre for global trade.

"We will do our utmost to keep China's economic growth stable", Li said.

But Washington is the island's main ally and arms supplier - without diplomatic recognition - and Beijing has bristled at any weapons sales or high-level contacts between the U.S. and Taiwan.

Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen said her country will develop a streamlined settlement plan for Hong Kong citizens fleeing Mainland Chinese rule.

China Approves Hong Kong Security Legislation, Defying Trump

Where does that leave Hong Kong? .

Hong Kong is one of the world's top trading territories.

Trump in the last several weeks has been very critical of China's inability to control the spread of the novel coronavirus within its territory.

Pompeo's determination opened the door to possible sanctions and the loss of special perks Hong Kong has received from the United States. "Chinese people are a great people", Pompeo said when asked about the concerns.

Not so much as it might have been at the time of the Hong Kong handover. "It could be the end of Hong Kong as a financial hub in the region and the world", said Ms. Glaser, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank in Washington. "We'll be making certain decisions and we'll be discussing them tomorrow", he said.

China's treatment of Hong Kong has further fuelled tensions between the U.S. and China.

Maas' comments come after China's National People's Congress (NPC) voted overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal to draft the controversial national security bill for Hong Kong.

How could this affect the United States? In 2018, the total value of that trade was nearly $67bn according to the US Trade Representative, including $17bn worth of imports that Americans bought from Hong Kong.

Pompeo notified Congress on Wednesday that Hong Kong is no longer deserving of the preferential trade and commercial status it has enjoyed from the US since it reverted to Chinese rule in 1997.

That puts Washington in a tricky position, according Dr Summers. But he said, what it's really about is US-China relations. More than 300 were arrested, but they say they're going to continue that protest.

"That may well drive the thinking of what Trump does next more than any particular concern about the political autonomy of Hong Kong", he said.
