Hong Kong: the end of one country, two systems?

What Chinese crackdown means for Hong Kong's autonomy

The U.K.is looking to provide Hong Kong residents with a path to citizenship in response to China's controversial new national security law.

Markets are awaiting President Donald Trump's latest response.

China has rejected foreign criticism.

But the United States and Britain said they were raising Hong Kong during an informal, closed-door videoconference where Beijing can not block agenda items.

Hong Kong - a British colony for over 150 years - gave Hong Kongers the special BNO status before it handed the territory back to China in 1997.

Rebuilding trust across Hong Kong society by allowing the people of Hong Kong to enjoy the rights and freedoms they were promised can be the only way back from the tensions and unrest that the territory has seen over the past year.

Trump is set to speak later Friday on new U.S. measures against China as tensions rise between the two countries on a host of fronts.

The move follows a year of violent protests in Hong Kong and is unprecedented in its scope since the territory was handed over to China from the United Kingdom in 1997.

The EU has warned that imposing sanctions would not solve the crisis.

Trump, in remarks to reporters, declined to preview the press conference on Friday but said, "We're not happy with China".

Meghan and Harry's secret wedding anniversary celebrations detailed by insider
It is reported the couple spotted drones over the mansion, which is owned by their pal Tyler Perry , on May 9, 19, 20, 21 and 25. A friend told the Daily Beast: "They were out driving in the last month in Los Angeles and were noticed by paparazzi".

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Wednesday (27 May) that Europe must not be divided by Chinese authorities or drawn into a US-China spat.

Hong Kong's justice secretary Teresa Cheng told the BBC's Chinese service that any threat of sanctions was unacceptable.

"Are the sanctions being imposed with a view to coerce another state to change their policy.?"

What other global reaction has there been?

It also followed a statement from the U.S. Mission to the United Nations (USUN) that said China is blocking its calls for an urgent meeting at the UNSC on the security bill.

The UK, US, Australia and Canada said the new legislation would "curtail the Hong Kong people's liberties, and in doing so, dramatically erode Hong Kong's autonomy and the system that made it so prosperous".

China has denounced the move as interference, saying that the Hong Kong law was outside the mandate of the Security Council.

The framework guaranteed Hong Kong some autonomy and afforded rights and freedoms that do not exist in mainland China.

The resolution - which now passes to China's senior leadership - could also see China installing its own security agencies in the region for the first time. But they haven't implemented the security law yet. "When this [national security] law takes effect in September, the Chinese regime is going to be able to ban pro-democracy groups, arrest people for political crimes".
