2.1 million Americans filed for unemployment last week

Downtown Syracuse

Some regions were hit harder than others, according to numbers released earlier this week by the NYS Department of Labor.

They joined some 2.1 million people across the country who sought jobless aid the week ending May 23, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday, for a total more than 40 million Americans who've lost work due to the pandemic.

The big picture: The number of weekly jobless claims during the coronavirus crisis peaked at 6.9 million in late March.

Roughly a quarter of the total USA workforce has been put out of work since the COVID-19 pandemic caused government officials to shut down most or all businesses deemed non-essential, with another 2.1 million Americans filing jobless claims over the past week, Politico reported.

French carmaker Renault to cut 15,000 jobs worldwide
It's aimed at saving more than 2 billion euros, or about 2.2 billion dollars, over three years. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire earlier this week that the group's survival is at stake.

That said, much of the backlog should have been eliminated by now, economists argue, after local governments completed updates of their websites and hired thousands of additional staff to help speed up processing. Despite a gradual state-by-state reopening, numerous stores and restaurants that have returned to business must operate at one-quarter of their pre-coronavirus capacity, due to social distancing measures, requiring a smaller amount of staffing.

As South Dakota businesses begin to reopen, the number of people claiming unemployment begins to drop. One potential problem with this system is that unemployed workers might get more money than normal for not working, while workers who are considered essential don't get any hazard pay despite potential exposure to COVID-19.

Thursday's jobless data comes ahead of next Friday's closely watched monthly employment report.

Unemployment in Onondaga County reached 16.1%, records show.
