USA coronavirus toll surpasses 100000 mark

US coronavirus deaths top 100,000

More than 100,000 Americans have died of the coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins - a awful milestone that puts the death toll far beyond some of the most tragic events in USA history.

The United States has become the first country to reach 100,000 deaths in relation to Covid-19.

Washington state, which saw the first major outbreak in the US, has had just 1,100 deaths. The US remains the worst affected nation in the world.

Democratic leaders have suggested that official buildings should fly flags at half-mast to mark the tragic occasion. Still, more than 500 Americans under the age of 35 have died.

U.S. President Donald Trump has argued that his country's increased virus testing capacity is contributing to the rise in the number of confirmed cases, calling the high figure a "badge of honor".

Andrew Cuomo: ‘We All Failed’ at Projecting the Coronavirus
He expressed anger and frustration over some conservatives, who had called federal aid to NY state as a " blue state bailout ". But the governor said his April meeting about testing was productive and a "very good conversation".

The once-unthinkable toll appears to be just the beginning of untold misery in the months ahead as Las Vegas casinos and Walt Disney World make plans to reopen, crowds of unmasked Americans swarm beaches and public health officials predict a resurgence by fall.

"Now we're going toward 50, I'm hearing, or 60,000 people".

Meanwhile, there have been more than 5.5 million coronavirus cases and over 350,000 deaths worldwide. The United States has three fatalities per 10,000 people. All three of those states had among the fewest COVID-19 tests performed per capita as of mid-May. "That's 15 to 20 times more than we will lose".

Countries with low death rates suppressed the virus "through lots of testing, contact tracing and policies to support isolation and quarantine of people at risk", Michaud said. "Almost certainly it's higher", Dr Anthony Fauci, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director who sits on the White House coronavirus task force, said about the death toll at a Senate hearing on May 12. "So, now we are in this shameful situation".
