The president also acknowledged those families in attendance at Fort McHenry who had lost loved ones in conflict.

Americans have marked a Memorial Day like no other as the coronavirus pandemic forced communities to honour the nation's military dead with smaller, more subdued ceremonies.

He also said: "Together we will vanquish the virus and America will rise from this crisis to new and even greater heights".

At the Baltimore's historic Fort McHenry, President Trump delivered a Memorial Day address to honor the fallen soldiers while touting America's long history of courage and fortitude in the face of adversity.

Earlier, President Trump silently honored the nation's war dead at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, which is now closed to the public.

President Trump then traveled to Baltimore, to the chagrin of the city's mayor, and noted that tens of thousands of service members and national guard personnel are now "on the front lines of our war against this bad virus". "No obstacle ... is a match for the sheer determination of the American people", he said.

"We lay this wreath to pay respects to all of our courageous service members & fallen heroes".

United Kingdom now wants Apple, Google to improve NHS contact tracing app
This is different to the "decentralised" model used by Apple and Google , where the matches take place on users' handsets. Dr William Matchett, now an author, said retired officers may be cautious about downloading the app.

More than 1.65 million Americans have tested positive for the virus and over 98,000 have died as of Monday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Trump tweeted his frustration with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, who has been moving his state into a cautious reopening that will keep indoor entertainment venues, like its National Basketball Association arena, closed for the time being.

Cooper's office told the AP they are working with the GOP on convention details.

Trump has been steadily ramping up his schedule in an effort to portray the nation as returning to its pre-pandemic ways as it emerges from a devastating economic shutdown meant to slow the virus. This month, President Trump has toured factories in Arizona, Pennsylvania and MI that make pandemic supplies.

Coinciding with this, the president played golf at his private Virginia club on Saturday and Sunday and kept a packed Memorial Day schedule - despite criticism from Baltimore's mayor. "His ageless words became the anthem of our nation: "The Star-Spangled Banner". REUTERS/Joshua Roberts Trump didn't directly address Young's comments in remarks at Fort McHenry, but expressed optimism about the fight against the pandemic, which has already claimed almost 100,000 lives in the U.S.

"Jack" Young, a Democrat, criticized Trump's "nonessential travel" to his city amid the pandemic, saying the president is not setting a good example, according to a USA Today report.

However, President Trump's actions were defended by White House spokesman Judd Deere with the statement, "The fearless men and women who have preserved our freedoms for generations did not stay home and the President will not either as he honors their sacrifice by visiting such a historic landmark in our Nation's history". He added that the president's trip was certain to violate restrictions in Baltimore banning gatherings of more than 10 people.
