Hyundai previews heavily redesigned Santa Fe SUV

Hyundai Santa Fe teaser image

Hyundai has released a teaser image depicting its updated Santa Fe, while also confirming the large SUV will switch to a new platform. The new platform made its debut on the latest Hyundai Sonata past year and will allow the introduction of hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants on the Santa Fe for the first time.

While Hyundai regards the new Santa Fe as a "revision" of the current model (and may even retain the existing TM model code), WhichCar has learnt that it will be bigger inside and out, and employs a different platform, suggesting a dramatic redesign.

More images are expected soon along with extra information that will start to unravel some of the "technological enhancements" contained within the new Santa Fe, which Hyundai is describing as "the ultimate family adventure vehicle".

The T-shaped DRL is created to be seen from a distance and gives guidance on the improvement of undisclosed technology. The 2020 Santa Fe will be the first Hyundai SUV based on the new third-generation Hyundai vehicle platform.

The Australian Santa Fe range expanded previous year to include a front-wheel drive petrol 3.5-litre V6 powertrain, replacing the existing naturally-aspirated petrol four-pot. Besides the aesthetic updates, the new Santa Fe will also get "interior design updates providing premium amenities and comfort".

Specific details on the SUV's cosmetic revisions still remain sparse but, judging by this teaser image, the new Santa Fe will feature a heavily redesigned front end, with a broader radiator grille and fresh T-shaped LED daytime running lights.

The SUV is likely to be powered by the same 1.6-litre "T-GDi" petrol turbo engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack that is used in Kia Sorento.

Hyundai added that the new details on the latest incarnation of its SUV should be revealed in the coming weeks. As far as its probability of arriving in India is concerned it is still not clear.

The fourth-generation of Hyundai's popular SUV made its global debut early in 2018 and arrived in Australian showrooms in July of the same year, but a single teaser image released by the South Korean auto maker today is heralding the arrival of a fifth-gen model.
