Beijing urges United States to drop 'wishful thinking' of changing China

China's foreign minister says US is pushing relations to 'brink of new Cold War'

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has rejected the argument expressed by some western nations that Beijing is exporting medical equipment to increase its global political presence.

Longstanding tensions between the administrations of US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have worsened in recent weeks over the coronavirus pandemic and China's recent proposal for imposing new security legislation in Hong Kong, which Wang said should be imposed "without the slightest delay".

"Some US political forces are taking hostage of China-US relations, attempting to push the ties to the brink of so-called "new Cold War"," Wang said.

"Both of us bear a major responsibility for world peace and development", he said.

"The priority for China, the United States and the rest of the world at this moment is to end the pandemic as soon as possible and so China will not launch a confrontational approach against the USA even if the U.S. is in a worsening situation".

Wang took an apparent swipe at the USA struggles to contain the virus, which has now infected more people in the United States than anywhere else.

He said a country that makes light of and excludes the World Health Organization is paying a high price.

He said China was "open" to worldwide cooperation to identify the source of the novel coronavirus, but stressed that any investigation must be "free of political interference".

Three further Louth cases of Covid-19 confirmed
NISRA figures relate to information entered on death certificates, completed by medical professionals. Another 64 of the beds are taken up by non COVID-19 related patients, providing 24 spare ICU beds.

"China and ASEAN members have agreed to conclude the COC at an early date, a goal we are confident and determined to achieve", he said, noting that no outside interference can distract or sabotage such efforts.

Most members of the scientific community, however, believe the virus jumped from animals to humans, possibly from a Wuhan market selling a range of exotic animals that ordinarily would not come in contact with one another.

In recent weeks, the USA and Australia have called for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus.

USA lawmakers have advanced several pieces of legislation targeting China in recent weeks with bipartisan support amid mounting calls for lawmakers to punish Beijing for its alleged failure to disclose information early on about the spread of Covid-19. The agreement came with an EU-brokered resolution that called for multilateralism and was in stark contrast to U.S. criticism of the body's actions during the pandemic. The agency's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, elected with a majority of votes, has the full confidence of the global community, said Wang.

"Aside from the devastation caused by the novel coronavirus, there is also a political virus spreading through the US", Wang said. State Councillor Wang, speaking at his annual news conference on the sidelines of China's parliament, expressed his deep sympathies to the USA for the pandemic, where the death toll is expected to surpass 100,000 in the coming days, the highest by any country.

"Some politicians ignored the basic facts and made up countless lies and conspiracy theories concerning China", Wang said.

The introduction in China's legislature on Friday of a proposal to impose a security law in Hong Kong to suppress the semi-autonomous city's pro-democracy movement has further raised the temperature, drawing U.S. and world condemnation.

But Wang defended the plan, saying it must be implemented "without the slightest delay", adding that months of often-violent Hong Kong protests a year ago against China's growing influence in the financial hub had "seriously endangered China's national security".
