Wuhan bans eating of wild animals

Provinces in China offer breeders money to quit wildlife trading

Wildlife in China is still being used for making alternate medicines and research and experts have said that only a complete ban on wildlife trade can prevent another virus outbreak. A civet cat, the wild animal believes to have carried SARS to humans in another outbreak nearly two decades ago, will fetch 600 yuan.

The city of Wuhan, China, where the novel coronavirus first surface, has now introduced a ban on the hunting and eating of wild animals.

The wet-markets, at closer proximity to humans, with high viral burden or strains of higher transmission efficiency, facilitate the transmission of the viruses to humans.

Eating wild animals is now officially banned in Wuhan, China, the city's administration recently announced.

Following a months-long lockdown to limit the spread of the virus, Wuhan merchants began reopening their wet market stalls last month.

Both Jiangxi and Hunan border Hubei, the province where the coronavirus first emerged in December.

Wildlife farmers in Hunan and Jiangxi provinces are set to be compensated for switching to growing fruits, vegetables, tea plants or herbs. Past outbreaks, including the 2004 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) pandemic, have also been attributed to the live animal markets. The initial rollout covers 14 species of farmed wildlife and offers farmers subsidies for each species, such as $88 per porcupine; $84 per civet cat; $17 per kilogram of cobra, king rattle, or rat snakes; $10 per kilogram of bamboo rat; $53 per wild goose; and $346 per Chinese muntjac deer.

In Jiangxi, authorities will help farmers dispose of animals and provide financial aid. The report said that their stock adds up to around 1.6 billion yuan ($225 million).

"China completed the identification and sequencing of the virus as early as on 7 January 2020, and shared the genome sequence information with World Health Organization and other countries on 11 January". But wildlife consumption is not the biggest industry in the country.

"In the case of an independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19 or on how it became uncontrollable, it would go against the core interest of the Party", he told Newsweek.
