What's new in iOS 13.5? Including the COVID-19 contact tracing tech

Apple Update Alerts When Someone With Covid-19 Is Near

Unlocking newer iPhone models that use Face ID can be annoying during the current pandemic.

Officially called "Exposure Notifications" in the iOS 13.5 update, Apple (along with Google doing the same with Android) has baked in an API for contact tracing apps. The facial recognition tech isn't created to work with a face mask and it can be a hassle to skip Face ID in order to enter the passcode.

Apple is turning the iPhone into a tool to help fight the coronavirus.

Apple's iOS 13.5 fixes a bug wherein iPhone users see a black screen when trying to play streaming video from some websites.

Previously, a user could have swiped up on an iPhone's unlock screen and tapped the words "Face ID" to be taken to the passcode; the update makes this process a couple seconds faster. The notes also detail the contact tracing apps framework or "Exposure Notification API".

You can also delete your Exposure Log and check who has requested to check your Exposure Log when public health agencies release their apps. You can download them over the air via the Settings app. The software which will use Bluetooth technology to let public health authorities build apps to alert people who have been in close proximity with someone who has been tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Face recognition with masks works with authentication in the App Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iTunes and other apps that support signing in with Face ID. Once again, just to clarify, Face ID is available on select few iPhones, starting with the iPhone X. The iOS 13.5 update had hit the "golden master" (pre-release testing) stage only two days ago, and measures 420MB in size for users who keep their devices regularly updated. For example, iOS 13.5 also provides an update to Facetime in which the automatic arrangement of video tiles in group calls can be disabled if desired.
