USA wants World Health Organization review of COVID-19 response to start 'now'

106,000 COVID-19 cases recorded in 24hrs — highest toll in a single day

The first COVID-19 cases emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan last December.

Furthermore, a motion by 14 countries prior to the assembly calling for the inclusion of officials from Taiwan as observers of the assembly has been deferred.

THE WORLD HEALTH Organisation has said more than five million people have been infected by Covid-19 across the globe.

According to Bain, the proposal to include Taiwan will be discussed by the WHO's General Committee, which would make recommendations for the next assembly session.

U.S. president Donald Trump made public a letter he sent to Tedros, saying that if the World Health Organization did not commit to "major substantive improvements" within 30 days, he would permanently freeze funding to the organisation and reconsider USA membership. Trump reignited the conflict this week, threatening to withdraw from the World Health Organization and withhold funding.

Heads of government and member states who were at the assembly adopted a resolution that set out a clear roadmap of the critical activities and actions that must be taken to sustain and accelerate the response at the national and global levels.

Questions are being raised by some countries, including the United States, about whether WHO's warning system for alerting the world to outbreaks is adequate, and suggesting that member states might need to "reassess" its role in providing travel advice to countries.

But despite being rivals, Apple and Google have made a decision to join hands to fight against the on-going coronavirus war. Both phases will be reliant on Google Play Services for updates, starting with the initial API rollout next month.

"We applaud the call for an impartial, independent, and comprehensive review, to be undertaken in consultation with Member States, and urge that work begin now".

The Trump administration demanded a review of the WHO's actions.

He said an independent evaluation, which would look at what lessons could be learned and put forward any recommendations, would take place "at the earliest opportunity".

He alluded to a resolution passed Tuesday by the WHO's assembly calling on its director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to launch "comprehensive evaluation" of the WHO-coordinated worldwide response to the outbreak to begin "at the earliest appropriate moment". The resolution is a concrete manifestation of this call, and a roadmap for controlling the outbreak. Meanwhile, Ryan said reviews are usually done after emergencies are over. I don't want to go through it, the letter is very detailed, long letter.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne and the country's Minister for Health Greg Hunt hailed the adoption of the "landmark resolution".

Anchor: Instead of taking part in the latest World Health Organization's annual assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump recently sent a letter to the United Nations health agency, threatening to halt funding and sever its membership.
