Sweden Coronavirus Herd Immunity Attempt Failing: Only 7.3% Of Population Have Antibodies

Sweden overtakes UK with highest coronavirus death rate per capita -did they get it wrong?

The research, based on 1,100 tests across Sweden and carried out by the country's public health agency, found that just 7.3% of people had developed antibodies which could provide immunity, Reuters reported. Its goal is to perform the same number of tests every seven days over an eight-week period.

"It means either the calculations made by the agency and myself are quite wrong, which is possible, but if that's the case it's surprising they are so wrong", he told the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, according to the Guardian.

Sweden has revealed that despite adopting more relaxed measures to control coronavirus, only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed the antibodies needed to fight the disease by late April.

Herd immunity it is reached when the majority of a certain population - from 70 to 90% - becomes immune from an infectious disease, both because it has been infected and cured, and through vaccination.

The country has kept open schools, bars and restaurants and they have continued to allow gathering of up to 50 people. It did, however, ask people to refrain from making long journeys, placing an emphasis on personal responsibility.

Experts say populations can achieve so-called herd immunity to a virus when about 60% of people have caught it.

The findings were roughly in line with models predicting a third of the Swedish capital's population would have had the virus by now and where at least limited herd immunity could have set in, the Swedish Health Agency said on Wednesday. H. Michael Mina, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Chan School of Public Health, recently said Interview With The World of Public Radio International.

US Senate Passes Bill That Could Block Chinese Companies From Stock Exchanges
These companies have a combined capitalisation of over $1.8 trillion. "I've asked my committees to take a look at what it is". He, however, added that a crackdown could probably backfire and hit exchanges in London and Hong Kong.

This in Sweden was encouraged by Chief Epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, whose recommendation was voluntary measures against corona, rather than a mandatory lockdown like those imposed by many other countries across the world.

Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, estimated earlier this month on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon that between 5% and 15% of people in the USA have been infected. A report he wrote with other epidemiologists and a historian estimated that this will likely take 18 to 24 months.

The World Health Organization has warned against pinning hopes on herd immunity.

He said the strategy "worked in some respects ... because our healthcare system has been able to cope".

Asked if Sweden's policy will help withstand the second wave, Teignel said he believes it will.

"It is of course awful that we have such a higher death toll at our elderly care homes, and there are lessons to be learned for those who work in these institutions".

Sweden it has now had 32,172 cases and 3,871 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
