Scientists recruiting over-55s for vaccine trial

Many will get a placebo to compare data.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca plan to recruit around 10,000 adults and children in Britain for trials of an experimental coronavirus vaccine which on Thursday received USA backing worth up to US$1.2 billion (S$1.71 billion).

The same investigational vaccine protected six monkeys from pneumonia caused by the virus.

Speaking about the recent Reuters survey, Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease and vaccine expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville said: "It's a little lower than I thought it would be with all the attention to COVID-19". To get there, leading vaccine makers have agreed to share data and lend the use of their clinical trial networks to competitors should their own candidate fail, the scientists said.

Fox News has reached out to Oxford University and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency with a request for comment.

Phase II will recruit up to 10,260 people, and expand the age range of participants to include the elderly and children, those aged over 56 and those between 5 and 12 years old. The advanced trial phase will comprise stage 2 and 3 trials of the COVID-19 vaccine.

United Kingdom to introduce COVID Passports
This comes just hours after British authorities announced exactly the same measure in a bid to prevent a second wave of Covid-19. Arrivals will be advised to use personal transport to head to their accommodation and once there not leave for 14 days.

He said a second group of 10,000 frontline workers will also participate in the study. "How quickly we reach the numbers required will depend on the levels of virus transmission in the community".

Asked who should come forward to take part, Prof Pollard said "very healthy individuals" will be initially selected.

The company said that it is capable of producing over one billion doses of the AZD1222 vaccine for this year and the next.

With 252,246 cases and 36,124 deaths the U.K.is one of the most impacted countries by the coronavirus pandemic.

A quarter of Americans have little or no interest in taking a coronavirus vaccine, a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Thursday found, with some voicing concern that the record pace at which vaccine candidates are being developed could compromise safety.

She said: "This is an incredibly important study to be involved in and we are delighted to be able to utilise the unbelievable respiratory infection expertise that we have within our team at LSTM, and across Liverpool and Merseyside to make a vital contribution from the Northwest to this UK-wide phase of this pivotal clinical trial".
