The country's army tweeted that troops had reached the site to conduct relief-and-rescue efforts.

"The last we heard from the pilot was that he has some technical problem", the state carrier's spokesman Abdullah H. Khan said in a video statement.

An official at the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said "probably a technical fault" was to blame for the crash. Television footage showed cars and homes on fire in the neighbourhood near the airport in the nation's commercial hub.

The flight typically takes an hour and a half to travel from the northeastern city of Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's most populous Punjab province to Karachi.

The Airbus A320 was en route to Karachi when the crash occurred.

Foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the plane crashed into a residential area minutes before it was due to land.

The aircraft, PIA Airbus A320, was on its way from Lahore to Karachi when it crashed in a residential area near Jinnah International Airport on Friday (May 22).

The plane, according to reports, was attempting to land for a second time after cancelling the previous attempt in a routine maneuver known as a go-around.

Police wearing protective masks struggled to clear away crowds to allow a firetruck and an ambulance to move through the narrow streets toward the crash site, the air filled with dust and smoke.

"Sir, mayday, mayday, mayday, mayday Pakistan 8303", the pilot then declared.

A resident of the colony who witnessed the crash told Ary News channel that the aircraft had fire coming from its wings which crashed into rooftops of some houses before it crash landed.

Local health officials at two hospitals, the Jinnah and Civic hospitals, gave death tolls to the BBC and Pakistani media, adding up to 76 confirmed deaths.

In 2016, a Pakistan International Airlines plane burst into flames after one of its two turboprop engines failed while flying from the remote north to Islamabad, killing more than 40 people.

The military quickly was sent to the scene, according to a series of tweets from a spokesperson for Pakistan's armed forces.

The Sindh region's Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah visited Masud at the Darul Sehat Hospital in Karachi and had a brief talk with him, reports said.

The coronavirus cases in the country have crossed the 50,000-mark after a record 2,603 more patients were diagnosed.
