Leaving hand sanitizer in hot vehicles a fire risk: Alberta doctors

Burnt out car door highlights dangers of leaving hand sanitiser in a hot vehicle

The advice comes in a daily COVID-19 newsletter distributed to physicians, volunteers and staff by AHS president Dr. Verna Yiu and senior medical health officer Dr. Laura McDougall.

The hand sanitizer market in the United States skyrocketed by 1,400 percent in just the first month of the Covid-19 outbreak as people have been encouraged to use them when they have no access to hand washing, like in a auto.

"Storing hand sanitizer in vehicles, especially in warmer temperatures, can increase the potential for ignition".

"By its nature, most hand sanitizer is alcohol-based and therefore flammable", the fire department wrote, per WFLA.

The Western Lakes Fire District said leaving clear water bottles inside cars on a warm day could also be a fire risk.

Don't come for Hailey Bieber! Justin Bieber took a break from quarantine to go for a barefoot bike ride in Beverly Hills. Hailey claims she's never had anything done and that a makeup artist edited the pic in question.

"In extreme heat, it can ignite due to its high alcohol content".

The firefighters also shared information from a 2010 research showing the statistics of vehicle fire accidents and deaths and linked a video warning of the fire hazards of hand sanitizers inside hot cars from the National Fire Protection Association.

More insight about the possibilities of fires starting in your auto during warm weather can be found at this link from the National Fire Protection Association.

The chief fire marshal in Lethbridge, a city in southern Alberta, added his voice to the warning Friday. "Please ensure hand sanitizers are always stored in a cool, dry place". If a bottle of hand sanitizer is kept in a auto during hot weather, it can be exposed to sunlight.
