Human trials of British coronavirus vaccine to widen to 10000

"This contract with AstraZeneca is a major milestone in Operation Warp Speed's work toward a safe, effective, widely available vaccine by 2021", US Health Secretary Alex Azar said.

When looking at COVID-19, he said vaccines developed in the past for other types of coronaviruses didn't protect mucous membranes in the nose where the virus typically enters the body. Scientists have already warned that if ever there was to be a coronavirus vaccine, it wouldn't offer full immunity. "This group will assess how well the vaccine works to prevent people from becoming infected and unwell with COVID-19", they said in the statement.

AstraZeneca had already signed an agreement to supply 100 million doses of the vaccine to the British government and it reiterated it hopes to start delivery in September. Ministers have promised Britain will get first access to the vaccine.

The vaccine was originally developed against MERS, the last coronavirus to jump from animals to humans. NIAID is helping fund trials of Moderna's vaccine candidate. The company caused uproar among French government officials after it claimed that due to Washington's generous financing the United States would have first priority for any vaccine. "You're going to have a lot of big announcements over the next week or two" on therapeutics.

AstraZeneca has said that the production would take place in not just one country, but several.

Last month, Oxford University researchers began vaccinating more than 1,000 volunteers in a preliminary study created to test the shot's safety. Data from the trial is expected shortly. In Britain's soon-to-begin larger tests, researchers will address how Oxford's shot will affect older adults, who are at high risk from COVID-19.

For treatment, patients have been getting antibody-rich plasma donated by people who recovered from COVID-19, and drugmakers are at work producing refined and concentrated versions of that serum.

US-based Inovio Pharmaceuticals said Wednesday its experimental vaccine produced protective antibodies and immune system responses in mice and guinea pigs.
