European Union agrees not to process location data in Covid-19 tracing app

EU Says Coronavirus Tracking Apps Should Avoid Storing Data on Servers

There have been some unexpected side-effects to the coronavirus pandemic, including the teaming up of Google and Apple to provide information to the public about the spread of the disease.

But despite being rivals, Apple and Google have made a decision to join hands to fight against the on-going coronavirus war.

The contact tracing system, when completed, will use Bluetooth to exchange unique codes between closely-located iOS/Android devices.

Public authorities will use the official apps to access the data of the users who downloaded the applications.

European Union countries using mobile phone apps to help contain the spread of the coronavirus have been warned the technology must not breach the bloc's rules on data and privacy.

As the world continues to combat a global threat, also known as COVID-19, the business has seen both negative and positive impacts.

US Senate Passes Bill That Could Block Chinese Companies From Stock Exchanges
These companies have a combined capitalisation of over $1.8 trillion. "I've asked my committees to take a look at what it is". He, however, added that a crackdown could probably backfire and hit exchanges in London and Hong Kong.

"We can not allow the COVID-19 pandemic to serve as an excuse for indefinite surveillance (by governments)", adding that any use of intelligence must be transparent and proportionate to the threat. This method will help in preventing further infections and is one of the most effective solutions to contain the numbers of COVID-19 infections.

Google and Apple say that their cross-platform tracing system will be rolled out in two phases.

Play Services are updated automatically in the background, which means more Android users will receive the feature using this technique.

European countries hope that rolling out mobile apps to track coronavirus cases will make it easier to lift the lockdown orders that have crushed European and world economies. Both phases will be reliant on Google Play Services for updates, starting with the initial API rollout next month. However, there are still some Android devices that will not benefit from the new update. So, Apple, in collaboration with Google, will launch "a comprehensive solution" for contact tracing.

Apple and Google haven't released a statement or comment in response to Blumenthal's remarks yet.

Google addressed the issue by developing a framework that companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, and other Chinese manufacturers can replicate for their Android products to have a secure tracking system. And Blumenthal wants the companies to show and be clear about how exactly they plan on ensuring user's privacy.
