Coronavirus: Premier League chief growing 'confident' on June re-start

The Reds would've been crowned Premier League champions by now for the first time in their history if not for the global health crisis.

He says the Premier League is "as confident as we can be" about a return to action, yet it remains the case that nothing has been rubber-stamped.

Chelsea FC are now in fourth place in the Premier League table as they chase a top-four finish in Frank Lampard's first campaign in charge.

"It's great for everybody, including the fans, to see our players back on the training ground".

Masters said a trophy presentation would be organised when the title is won, provided the Premier League could facilitate the handover.

Although some dissent has been voiced as to the return of the game, including from Watford captain Troy Deeney, who will not return to training, Masters is confident that the players are as safe as they possibly can be.

And Werner has revealed plans to have the same sort of arrangement if and when they're confirmed as Premier League winners.

"We wouldn't have taken the first step to get back to training if we weren't convinced we had created a very safe environment for our players", he said.

Questioned on whether he would agree to train, Masters said: "I think I would".

Six individuals at Premier League clubs tested positive for coronavirus this week, including Burnley assistant boss Ian Woan and Watford player Adrian Mariappa.

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante is prepared to sit out the remainder of the season, if it resumes, after expressing concerns over returning to training, British media have reported.

Premier League officials, medical experts and representatives from all 20 sides held talks on Monday via a video conference call and agreed to stage one - non-contact and in small groups - of the return to training protocols.

"We're talking to the authorities about that", he said.

"I'm not sure, I don't have any information but I think we are not going to start June 12".

"I do believe we can appeal to fans not to congregate outside football grounds or go to other people's houses to watch football matches in contravention of government guidelines".
