Safe Reopening of LA Restaurants, Malls Could Be As Soon as July 4

L.A. County officials said Tuesday that they have set a goal of reopening restaurants, retail stores and malls by July 4. There were only slight differences in positivity rates by race and ethnicity.

An interactive dashboard is available that provides an overview on COVID-19 testing, cases and deaths along with maps and graphs showing testing, cases and death data by community poverty level, age, sex and race/ethnicity. Other areas with high populations of Armenian-Americans, include Burbank (363 cases), East Hollywood (19 cases), Hollywood (248 cases), Little Armenia (172 cases), Montebello (304 cases), North Hollywood (586 cases), Northridge (274 cases), Pasadena (784 cases), Sunland (125 cases), and Tujunga (105 cases). Everyone must continue to follow distancing and infection control protocols, stay at least six feet apart and wear a clean cloth face covering that securely covers both your nose and mouth when in contact with other people not in your household.

"We continue to be moving in the right direction", she said. Just this week we learned that one USA team developing a vaccine using a new, mRNA-based technology, has already shown some positive preliminary results. The number of new cases is higher than the daily median, which may reflect some tests processed in batches over the weekend.

"Many people across the county have lost loved ones to COVID-19". In a key indicator, the number of people taking PCR tests who received a positive result declined this week to about 9 percent, after remaining stable at about 11 percent for more than a month.

That message will likely be amplified as the week goes on, given the approaching Memorial Day weekend and inevitable desire for residents to flock to beaches or hold parties.

Neeraj Sood, a USC professor of public policy at the USC Price School for Public Policy and lead investigator on the antibody study, noted several changes in methodology between the two rounds of testing, most notably a greater outreach to Spanish- and Mandarin-speaking residents in the May survey, along with changes in testing sites that contributed to different demographics.

"This is very good news", she said.

Elected officials also described a "sense of urgency" to address the mounting economic damage caused by the coronavirus and the measures taken to contain it. Tuesday marked the first gathering of the Los Angeles County Economic Resiliency Task Force, a gathering of elected officials and representatives from various economic sectors. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathry Barger described their assessment as "sobering". According to a statement issued by Supervisor Kathryn Barger, more than three quarters of the job losses linked to the pandemic are workers with average annual incomes of $50,000 or less, and the largest concentration of those job losses has been in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Small businesses and the poor have been particularly impacted.

"That's a goal, but we have to get there" Supervisor Hilda Solis said later during the news conference about the July 4 reopening date.

In a presentation, Bill Allen, president of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), confirmed there have been more than 1 million unemployment claims filed in L.A. County to date. In the interim, elected officials will await guidance from the state, and the assessment of local doctors and scientists. This week the state recorded its deadliest day of the outbreak, but health officials remain optimistic that California to slowly reopen.
