Nurse Shares Dramatic Before and After Photos After Long Fight Against Coronavirus

Young nurse infected with COVID-19 shares shocking before and after photos

"I thought I was young enough for it not to affect me, and I know a lot of people think that", he confessed to BuzzFeed News. He explained that he was in great physical health before contracting the virus, adding that he worked out 6-7 times a week and he weighed 190 pounds.

When asked by BuzzFeed about the toll COVID took his body and mind, along with the ordeals he faced due to contagion infection, Schultz said that it was one of the most frustrating parts.

Schultz calls himself the "bearded nurse" on Instagram, but COVID-19 also cost him that, too, as hospital staff had to shave his face for the ventilator.

He said it exhausted him to stand up at the hospital to click the photograph, but he shared the transformation pics on social media to warn others that the disease could happen to anyone.

Before testing for COVID-19, Schultz had been to a Miami Beach festival and then traveled to Boston with his boyfriend in mid-March.

Early on in the outbreak, many people dismissed COVID-19 as a mostly harmless virus. "I didn't think it was as serious as it was until after things started happening", Schultz told BuzzFeed News.

Schultz works as a nurse in San Francisco.

Though he knew about the virus, Schultz told BuzzFeed News that because he was young and had no underlying conditions he figured he could risk a trip to see his boyfriend, a 29-year-old DJ named Josh Hebblethwaite, perform at the festival. On March 14, he flew to Boston to be with Hebblethwaite during lockdown.

"I was so weak", he said.

Schultz was transported to a larger hospital within four days, where he was intubated for 4 1/2 weeks. He said holding his cellphone felt heavy and his hands shook while trying to type.

Two days later, he was in the hospital with a 103 fever and liquid in his lungs.

Schultz was hospitalized and had to be intubated for four and a half weeks. "I pretty much cried when I looked in the mirror". Hebblethwaite was quickly made his medical proxy in case anything were to happen to Schultz.

At least 38 people who attended the Miami festival ended up contracting COVID-19 and three people died.

His lung capacity is reduced, and his sense of taste isn't quite back to normal, but the registered nurse says he's able to do more and more with every passing day.

"The negative stuff bothers me", he said, "but it doesn't bother me that much, because I've gotten so much positive feedback".
