Microsoft Announces ‘World’s Fifth Most Powerful’ Supercomputer in Partnership With OpenAI

Microsoft's Cloud for Healthcare is an elaborate suite of telehealth tools

Microsoft said it will pull all of its technologies together into a package it calls "Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare".

Microsoft at Build 2020 on Tuesday announced its supercomputer that is touted to be the fifth most powerful publicly recorded supercomputer and the first to be hosted in the Azure cloud.

The cloud service will focus on what Microsoft has identified as important needs in healthcare, such as patient engagement, health team collaboration and improving operational efficiencies.

"Healthcare organizations are increasingly comfortable pursuing cloud-enabled digital transformation initiatives, and Microsoft is capturing a large share of this emerging business", he said. Developers previously made Teams apps manually, or using the App Studio inside Microsoft Teams.

The company is enabling the development capabilities for Teams apps through new extensions in Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code, which ranked as the two most popular development environments in a survey a year ago of almost 90,000 developers by the Stack Overflow online forum. The company also expanded WebView 2 with a new.NET Preview that would enable developers to embed web content within their apps using Microsoft Edge and Chromium.

"We know that technology has a role to play in accelerating progress for solutions to the pandemic and other pressing healthcare concerns and challenges".

That means it prevents the virus from attaching to the host's healthy cell, which is what leads to incubation and infection. It requires a rather complex process, and has to be closely monitored for contamination and other issues, Dr Lowe wrote.

"We want to carry all that information through the health experience", Deb Cupp, Microsoft's corporate vice president of enterprise and commercial industries, told Reuters in an interview.

This week, Microsoft's Build conference is happening and the company is making announcements from updates to Windows development to new API features in Office.

If the patient then comes to a clinic in person for a follow-up visit, all the data from the previous interactions will be available to the health care professional who sees the patient.

Microsoft also said it plans to make the system work with EHR providers such as Allscripts. In fact, the company says, Bookings has been used for over 34 million meetings in just the past month!

The cloud platform is underpinned by a focus on interoperability, security and compliance, Microsoft said.

According to Microsoft, machine learning experts usually develop smaller AI models that exist separately to learn a single task like recognizing human speech well enough to deliver the day's news when asked or to translating between languages. Last year, it pledged to support OpenAI's efforts to build "a hardware and software platform within Microsoft Azure which will scale to artificial general intelligence".
