Chrome's new update puts a premium on privacy and safety controls

Google Chrome 83 Debuts With Redesign Privacy and Security Settings Updated Incognito Mode

Specifically for desktop users, Google has redesigned privacy and security settings with simplified language and visuals.

Users can choose if and how cookies are used by websites, including the ability to block third-party cookies (even in Incognito mode) or block cookies entirely on some or all websites.

Google Chrome hasn't implemented the extreme level of tracker/ad blocking that we've seen in other web browsers over the past few years (I'm sure Google's position as an advertising company has nothing to do with that), but it has been taking small steps.

Google Chrome's back with a new update that should interest users who value privacy as well as those with messy tabs. Google has proposed new web standards that would make fingerprinting and cross-site tracking much more hard, and now the company is announcing some browser-level features that aim to improve privacy and security.

Google has also transformed the existing "People" section into "You and Google" that provides sync controls. And the "Clear browsing data" feature has now been moved to the top of the "Privacy & Security" section. There's also a new way to quickly see if Chrome is up to date with the latest security patches, and it can tell users how to remove malicious extensions. And as of today, Google Chrome is getting a massive privacy boost thanks to the inclusion of DNS-over-HTTPS.

There's also a new "Safety Check" feature that's been added to the settings menu. It will warn users before visiting a unsafe site or downloading a harmful app or extension if Safe Browsing is turned off. Users can choose to allow third-party cookies for specific sites.

Also new to Chrome 83 is Enhanced Safe Browsing which improves Chrome's accuracy of threat assessments.

This feature is brand new and now rolling out to Chrome 83 users.

"If you turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing, Chrome proactively checks whether pages and downloads are risky by sending information about them to Google Safe Browsing", said AbdelKarim Mardini, Senior Product Manager, Chrome, in a blog post.

The technology, called "DNS over HTTPS", uses a secure protocol to communicate with the Domain Name System - often described as a phone book for the web.

Though Chrome 83 and later supports DNS-over-HTTPS, Google isn't flipping the switch on it automatically.

The newer version will feature an Enhanced Safe Browsing option, which, when enabled will share users" URL of "uncommon' websites visited, with Google in real-time to prevent phishing tactics.
