SPAIN last night reported a record 864 coronavirus-related deaths in one day, as confirmed infections there broke through the 100,000 mark.

A total of 110,238 individuals have tested positive for the virus which reflects an increase of 8,102 from Wednesday's figure. More than 6,000 people have needed to go to intensive care units. Health authorities say contagion in Spain has dropped from a daily average of 20% until March 25 to less than 12% after that date, more than 10 days after Spaniards were ordered to stay home.

Airlines are meeting with the government to try to secure liquidity, the transport minister said Thursday.

Officials have warned that even if the epidemic is peaking, the pressure on the intensive care system would be subject to a lag of a week or longer, with hospitals likely to reach crisis point by the end of this week or early next. But the virus has continued to spread, overburdening the health system and straining supplies of crucial medical equipment.

The total number of current or active cases in Spain stood at 73,492 on Thursday, the government said.

"The combination of the two facts and the risk that it contributes to enhanced instability, enhanced unrest, and enhanced conflict are things that make us believe that this is the most challenging crisis we have faced since the Second World War", he said.

Support workers will change beds and perform other "non-clinical" tasks under the supervision of clinics, officials said. Manchester, meanwhile, will also provide an initial 500 beds, with a capacity to increase it up to 1,000 beds.

In the USA, more than 3,000 people have died from Covid-19, while there have been at least 160,698 confirmed cases detected through United States public health systems. In the first two weeks of the lockdown, calls to a government helpline for victims of gender violence shot up, the government said.

Meanwhile, the Spanish continue to adapt to the devastating economic impact of the pandemic.

The nation registered an increase in unemployment of 302,265 people in March compared to the previous month, according to Spanish Labor Ministry data released Thursday.

The increase represents the largest monthly increase since the records started, Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz said at a press conference in Madrid on Thursday.

At least 9,053 people have died in total during the outbreak.
