Shenzhen bans eating dogs, cats in post-coronavirus first for China

Boasting 13 million residents, the city introduced sweeping new rules that will come into effect on May 1.

China's top legislature said in February that it would ban the trade and consumption of wild animals.

Now Shenzhen will prohibit the consumption of state-protected wild animals and other terrestrial wild animals taken from the wild, as well as captive-bred and farmed terrestrial wild species.

"The market supervision department is responsible for supervising and managing the production, operation, advertising, and other activities of banned animals and their products in commodity trading, catering and other places and online trading platforms", it added.

Shenzhen has become the first Chinese city to ban the sale and consumption of dogs and cats, a move that comes after the coronavirus outbreak was linked to wildlife meat, prompting authorities to ban the trade and eating of wild animals, a media report said on Thursday. "This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilization", said the new legislation.

The legislation also contains an article that the consumption of "pet animals-such as dogs and cats-is not allowed".

"This really could be a watershed moment in efforts to end this brutal trade that kills an estimated 10 million dogs and 4 million cats in China every year", said Dr. Peter Li, the group's China policy specialist.

"The majority of these companion animals are stolen from people's back yards or snatched from the streets, and are spirited away on the backs of trucks to be beaten to death in slaughterhouses and restaurants across China".

Scientists and researchers are still no closer to finding out what the source of the virus is and how it could have spread to humans. Some of the earliest infections were found in people who had exposure to a wildlife market in the central city of Wuhan, where bats, snakes, civets and other animals were sold.

Provincial and city governments across the country have been grappling to enforce the ruling but Shenzhen pushed for extending the ban on cats and dogs too.

In February, Chinese authorities banned the trade and consumption of wild animals.

Thirty million dogs a year are killed across Asia for meat.

Most people in China don't eat dogs, in fact dog meat is only eaten infrequently by less than 20 percent of the Chinese population.
