Dr. Birx: Best-Case Scenario Is 100,000-200,000 US Deaths

Dr. Birx: U.S. faces up to 200,000 coronavirus deaths even if we do everything 'almost perfectly'

"It's possible. It's entirely possible that would happen if we don't mitigate". Even though the U.S. has better healthcare facilities and infrastructure compared to so-called third world countries, the experts have claimed that they are expecting the situation to get worse in the coming days.

Birx said the projections by Dr. Anthony Fauci that USA deaths could range from 1.6 million to 2.2 million deaths is a worst case scenario if the country did "nothing" to contain the outbreak, but said even "if we do things nearly perfectly", she still predicts up to 200,000 USA deaths.

He said that models projecting between 1 million and 2 million deaths are "almost...certainly off the chart".

On Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said thatthe overall American death toll could hit the hundreds of thousands.

"We don't have any firm idea", he said. Over 2,300 Americans have died after contracting the illness. "If we could hold that down to a 100,000 - it's a frightful number - we've done a very good job".

Another 393 coronavirus patients die in the United Kingdom , taking total to 1808
Health Secretary Matt Hancock also announced that he has the virus and will be in isolation, working from home. "As of 9am on 1 April 2020, 152,979 people have been tested, of which 29,474 were confirmed positive".

The warning comes one day after U.S. President Donald Trump extended social distancing guidelines for an additional 30 days running until the end of April in an effort to rein in the virus' spread as the death toll and number of infections continue to mount. Officials across the country have shut schools and businesses, while placing strict limits on public gatherings.

Birx is hoping that NY and New Jersey turn out to be unusual.

In New York, which remains the epicenter of the outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo is saying that virus is spreading "like fire through dry grass".

As Americans hunker down, Fauci has struck a cautiously upbeat tone saying he feels "confident" with all the knowledge now available on the virus. But it is true that since the beginning of the Coronavirus spread in the USA, in several press conferences President Trump repeatedly claimed that during the summer, the situation will be under control as the warmer weather will help to defeat the virus.

As the White House task force gets more data from domestic cases, Birx noted that "we're seeing things here that weren't reported from other places".
