Tesla Gigafactory 2 Will Reopen Soon To Make Ventilators

Tesla to slash on-site staff at Nevada factory by 75% due to virus county manager

"I want to thank Elon Musk and everyone at Tesla for responding so quickly to my call to begin making ventilators at the Tesla factory in Buffalo", New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan said in a letter to Musk, according to WKBW.

"Making good progress. We will do whatever is needed to help in these hard times".

The factory in Buffalo was shut down on Monday because of the crisis, but manufacturing ventilators could be reason enough to get the doors open again.

Musk's announcement came in response to a video of Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak telling CNBC that his company is partnering with Tesla and others to increase production capacity of its critical care ventilators.

Earlier this week, it was reported the state had about 3,000 to 4,000 ventilators on hand. Higher-grade ventilators are needed for severe cases. "One of our ventilators will be made by them and they are fast on track", Ishrak said.

The state is "still shopping for more ventilators now across the country" but "we need more", he said.

Recall that Tesla had recently announced that it was suspending operations at its factories at Fremont and NY where it produced electric vehicles and solar panels respectively.

'WTF!': Italian mayors lose it on those breaking coronavirus lockdown
Cateno De Luca, Mayor of Messina, in Sicily, also threatened his citizens. "With flamethrowers", President of Campania Vincenzo De Luca says.

'We're also converting anaesthesia machines into ventilators, ' he said. Earlier this week, he announced that Tesla had bought surplus ventilators in China and shipped them to the United States for distribution, a 1,000 of which went to California.

Its Fremont factory also halted work but the company said some basic operations would continue in order to support its "vehicle and energy service operations and charging infrastructure". There have also been almost 75,000 more confirmed cases, including, it emerged Thursday, two at Tesla itself.

Ford and General Motors are also working with medical companies to make ventilators and respirators.

The U.S. does have a national stockpile of medical equipment, known as the Strategic National Stockpile, in case of medical emergencies.

Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, speaks during the Satellite 2020 at the Washington Convention CenterMarch 9, 2020, in Washington, DC.

"Giga New York will reopen for ventilator production as soon as humanely possible", Musk tweeted on Wednesday.
