US Senate approves $2tn coronavirus relief bill

New Senate Stimulus Bill Would Ban Companies Owned by Trump or His Children From Receiving Any Bailout Money

The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved a $2 trillion relief package Wednesday night created to alleviate some of the worst effects of the swift economic downturn now underway as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last-minute objections on Wednesday delayed the Senate vote until late in the evening, when it passed on a vote of 96 to 0.

The measure now heads to the House of Representatives, where a Democratic leader said he expected it to pass by voice vote Friday before it goes to President Donald Trump for his signature.

Earlier in the day, McConnell touted the bipartisan deal reached overnight to provide cash payments to Americans, help to struggling small businesses and more resources to state and local governments, as well as to hospitals.

Working in tandem after days of feuding, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and top Democrat Chuck Schumer pressed for passage of the legislation in the Republican-led Senate by the end of the day.

Democrats' coronavirus proposal reportedly includes other measures such as repealing Trump's executive orders on unionization, forgiving $10,000 of student debt, implementing mandatory early voting and same-day voter registration, and requiring that any company receiving federal relief raise their minimum wage to $15 per hour.

New York, the epicentre of the outbreak in the country, has reported 280 fatalities 17,856 cases.

It followed days of vicious partisan infighting over what to include, in what ultimately may be the largest emergency rescue package lawmakers have ever passed.

The letter criticizes the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the stimulus package signed by President Obama during the Great Recession, for centering companies over workers, and it offers nearly 100 policy interventions to improve on that model.

PFA seek urgent meeting with clubs amid talk of wage deferrals
Macclesfield and Southend have been facing particular cashflow problems but the EFL hopes to keep clubs afloat. The PFA said: "As with other industries, the crisis is having a severe impact on the finances of the game".

With several members of both chambers of Congress testing positive for COVID-19, leaders were hoping to agree on a vote by unanimous consent rather than trying to bring the full House back to the capitol for a recorded roll call.

"The developments of this Senate relief bill are concerning", Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tweeted Tuesday afternoon, before the Senate agreement was finalized. "We're going to make good deals", Trump said during a press briefing on Monday. There's a ton of money in this bill for people who need it, but what we're doing now is, every special-interest group in town is trying to get a little bit more - nickling and diming at a time when people are dying, literally dying'.

But Cuomo said the Senate package would send less than $4 billion to NY, far short of his estimate that the crisis will cost his state up to $15 billion over the next year.

With infections rising, the injection for hospitals could be the bill's most effective element in fighting the pandemic, as it will help facilities provide protective gear, intensive care beds and ventilators and other medical equipment.

By Wednesday, however, she voted for the revised bill.

A $2 trillion aid package to ease the economic damage wrought by COVID-19 is nearing the finish line in Washington, D.C.

Why it matters: Per Axios' Alayna Treene, the emergency legislation will deliver desperately needed aid to American families, small businesses and corporations hit hardest by the virus. In fact, our unemployment claims in Montana since march 17th, we just looked it up 15 minutes ago, 14,350 Montanans have filed for unemployment in the last week'.

Another provision sends $130 billion to hard-hit hospitals and $150 billion to support financially hurting state and local governments fighting the pandemic. Both Republican and Democratic party members have designed this package to cover as many sectors and companies as possible.
