Italy CCP Virus Death Toll Rises Again With 743 New Deaths

Italy 601 new COVID-19 deaths but pace of cases slows

The number of total infections grew by 4,789, or 8 percent from 59,138 cases recorded on Sunday.

The total number of confirmed cases hit 69,176 on Tuesday, but with Italy testing only people with severe symptoms, the head of the Civil Protection Agency said the true number of infected people was probably 10 times higher. Latest figures show 6,077 people have died from the infection in barely a month, making Italy the worst-affected country in the world, with close to double the number of fatalities in China, where the virus emerged a year ago. He further added, "Unfortunately we are not seeing a change of trend in the numbers, which are rising".

Italy registered a record increase of 793 COVID-19 deaths on Saturday.

Moreover, among those infected with the Wuhan virus in Italy, 4,824 are healthcare professionals - meaning that roughly one in ten of the confirmed coronavirus cases in Italy are people who work in hospitals.

"Of the 50,418 people who are positive, some 26,522 are now under home isolation - being asymptomatic or with light symptoms - another 3,204 are in intensive care, and all the other hospitalized in ordinary wards", he specified.

Lombardy's regional authorities also reported slight positive signals on Monday, yet sounding cautious as well. The initial restrictions placed on the northern epicentre of the pandemic around Milan expired on March 22, and the national measures are set to end on March 25.

Officials of the World Health Organization have said they expect the peak of contagions in Italy to be reached by next week.
